ALIG & the Adopt a School Program
ALIG is an NGO that was started in 2008 in Jamshedpur, India. It aims to improve the lives of the poor by providing them with better quality education and healthcare. ALIG has worked for a decade to help over 8,000 students through child sponsorships and by ‘adopting’ a school. The ‘Adopt a School’ initiative uses money given by donors to help pay for the salary of qualified English teachers to work in a government school.
I visited Jamshedpur during the summer of 2018 and spent a few days with some of these schools. During my visit, I witnessed the impact of this initiative. The children in the classes of the ALIG-appointed teacher were far more engaged and motivated than students in other classes, and this also reflected in the performance of the students. Students worked harder, they learnt more, and they hopefully will go on to perform better in their careers. ALIG has already made a difference in these children’s lives, and is now looking to expand beyond the Adopt a School initiative to a new Digital Learning Program.
